STUMP CARE

It is very important to take care of the stump. Since the stump will remain in the prosthesis throughout the day, your skin is at risk of being irritated or infected by moisture. It will be necessary to clean the stump regularly and thoroughly every day to prevent the development of a skin condition.

  • Wash your stump daily (especially in the evening before going to bed)
  • You can check your stump daily with a mirror to check for blisters, sores or other signs of irritation.
  • Before going to bed, clean your stump with mild soap and water, pat dry and apply a small amount of conditioner (lotion) on the limb and massage gently into the skin.
  • Make sure your extremity is clean and dry both before and after using your prosthesis.

PAYMENT CONTROL

The edema that occurs during the prosthesis preparation process causes problems in terms of prosthesis compatibility and rehabilitation. In this period, the stump can be shaped by preventing or controlling the edema with different applications.

The most commonly used edema control method is elastic bandage. During elastic bandage applications

  • Pressure should be decreased from distal to proximal
  • Care should be taken that the bandage does not restrict circulation and joint movements.
  • The bandage should cover all sides of the stump, leaving no exposed tissue.
  • Recurrence and spiral windings should be preferred, circular windings should be avoided.

The bandage should remain on the stump for 6-8 hours 2-3 times a day. If the amputee feels numbness, tingling or discomfort before this time, the bandage should be removed and the stump checked.
When the user starts to use the prosthesis, bandage should be applied at night until the stump edema stabilizes.
The bandage must not have lost its elasticity
